Interventional cardiology

Interventional cardiology, which emerged in the 1980s and continues to evolve, has revolutionised the management of coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, valvular heart disease, myocardial and congenital heart conditions.

Interventional cardiology

The coronary arteries supply the heart muscle with blood and oxygen. Due to risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and genetic
predisposition, these arteries may gradually become damaged and narrowed or blocked over time

More than 700 interventional cardiology procedures are performed each year, supported by advanced endovascular techniques. These include pressure measurements used to calculate fractional flow reserve (FFR), intravascular ultrasound, and OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), which provide detailed assessment of atherosclerotic plaques and help optimise stent deployment.

The rapid development of interventional cardiology in various areas of heart disease has been fully integrated into our practise.

Itnow represents a significant part of our activity, particularly in the field of management of acute coronary syndromes. Each year, several hundred patients suffering from heart attacks are treated in our department.

Two types of procedures are available:

Coronary Angiography

Coronary angiography is a diagnostic procedure that uses X-rays to visualise the coronary arteries. This is achieved by injecting an iodine-based dy (contrast medium) through a long catheter (a very thin tube) inserted either at the wrist or in the groin.

Angioplasty

This procedure is usually performed immediately following a coronary angiogram or may be scheduled at a later date.

Coronary angioplasty involves treating lesions in the arteries by inflating a small balloon, which compresses the atherosclerotic plaque and widens the artery.

The procedure is carried out using the same type of catheter as for coronary angiography, inserted via the wrist or the groin. Once the coronary artery has been properly dilated, a stent (a small mesh tube), also known as a stent graft, is placed to keep the artery open and reduce the risk of re-narrowing (restenosis). The stent remains in place permanently, unless a bioresorbable stent is used.
