Cardiac MRI

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a highly advanced imaging technique that allows the heart to be visualised with great precision in multiple planes, using a powerful magnetic field and radiofrequency waves.

This technique does not involve radiation and produces high-quality images, enabling precise assessment of the structure and function of the heart muscle, as well as analysis of the heart valves and blood flow within the heart.

Cardiac MRI: What Conditions Can It Assess?

  • Heart muscle disorders:
    • Scarring following a myocardial infraction (assessment of the extent and myocardial viability
    • Inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis)
    • Structural abnormalities of the heart muscle (in genetic or acquired conditions)
  • Heart valve diseases:
    • Assessment of the severity of valve leakage and its impact on the heart and major blood vessels
  • Pericardial diseases (the lining around the heart):
    • Inflammation, thickening, or constriction of the pericardium
  • Congenital heart defects, before or after cardiac surgery
  • Heart tumours

The Team

Cardiac MRI is made available to patients through a partnership between the Department of Medical Imaging and the Cardiology Department, led by their respective heads, Prof. Patrice Jissendi and Prof. Philippe Unger, in collaboration with Dr Mihaela Amzulescu Stancu. Dr Mihaela Amzulescu has been certified in cardiac MRI by the European Society of Cardiology since 2014. She holds a PhD in Cardiac Imaging and has experience of more than 2,000 cardiac MRI examinations.

A dedicated team of medical imaging radiographers, together with an applications specialist, completes the team, ensuring high-quality examinations while maintaining patient comfort.

Cardiac MRI in Practice

Cardiac MRI produces static images, like photographs, to assess the anatomy and structure of the heart. It also provides dynamic images, including videos of the heart in motion, in cross-sectional or 3D views. These images are invaluable in the diagnosis and management of heart disease.

Using high-performance, internationally recognised image analysis software (Circle CVI), MRI scans carried out at our institution meet the highest quality standards.

You or your referring doctor will be able to access all images and videos via a web link.
