The High-Risk Pregnancy Unit (MIC: Maternal Intensive Care)
Some pregnant patients are admitted to hospital during their pregnancy. They are cared for in this unit by a multidisciplinary team dedicated to making your stay as comfortable as possible, even if it is sometimes a long one.
Mothers separated from their babies immediately after giving birth are also admitted to this ward.

The Neonatal Unit
The Neonatal Unit cares for newborns who require specialised care.
Most of these babies are premature and require state-of-the-art equipment and technology to ensure their survival. To minimise the stress experienced by children admitted to the Neonatal Unit, we have developed a care philosophy centred on the individual needs of each child, in close collaboration with their parents. The unit’s layout, which comprises numerous single rooms, has been designed to protect the children from the noise and light pollution typically found in this type of unit. Premature newborns are cared for in a calm and dimly lit environment.

which our hospital is the first accredited centre in Belgium (Brussels NIDCAP Training Centre). Newborns requiring special monitoring will be admitted to three specific wards depending on their condition:

The neonatal unit is divided into two sections: the NIC (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and the KOALA unit
NIC
Here, we care for children requiring a high level of monitoring, using resuscitation equipment and state-of-the-art technology. Thanks to a layout featuring numerous single rooms, we can tailor the environment to suit each baby’s age and specific needs.
In the NIC, mums or dads can stay overnight with their baby if they wish.
The KOALA Unit
The Koala Unit, or non-intensive neonatal care unit.
We admit newborns who require specific monitoring, such as those born slightly prematurely, as well as newborns who have been in intensive care once their condition has stabilised.
The Koala unit mainly consists of mother-and-baby rooms, and we encourage parents to stay with their baby from the moment of admission until they go home (the mother is initially admitted alongside her baby and then becomes a ‘support person’).
NIDCAP
Care is tailored to the baby’s behaviour. Understanding what a premature baby is telling us requires specialised training for healthcare staff. This specialist training is provided by the NIDCAP (Neonatal Individual Developmental Care and Assessment Program), for which our hospital is the first accredited centre in Belgium (Brussels NIDCAP Training Centre).
