In Western countries, the prevalence of hypertension is approximately 25%, representing nearly two and a half million people in Belgium. The prevalence increases with age, affecting more than 60% of individuals over the age of 60.
Often silent (asymptomatic), hypertension gradually damages vital organs such as the heart, brain, and kidneys, eventually leading to serious complications.
The management of hypertension is based on maintainin a healthy lifestyle (regular physical activity, stress reduction, maintaining a healthy weight, and reducing excessive salt intake). However, medication (antihypertensive treatment) is often required to effectively control blood pressure.
