What is the Fast Track unit?
The Fast Track Unit is a pre-operative unit where patients are admitted to prepare for surgery. It is a transit unit, which means patients do not return there after their operation.
Prepare for your hospital visit
Please bring:
- Your identity card and a means of payment (please avoid cash)
- The folder provided by the planning department containing the documents required for your stay
- Your insurance documents
- Any medication you are taking, along with necessary equipment such as your CIPAP machine, insulin pen, etc.
- Compression stockings if you have them or if they have been prescribed
- Any documents requested by the surgical team (medical imaging CDs, blood test results, etc.)
The day before your arrival
- Fast from midnight the night before: do not eat, drink or smoke.
- Shower the day before and again on the morning of the procedure. Please use the products provided during your pre-admission consultation, if applicable.
- Do not wear make-up or body lotion.
- Remove any nail polish.
- If required, shave the designated area using clippers if possible.
- Do not use a razor blade.
On the morning of the procedure
- Take the medication prescribed by the anaesthetist with a small amount of water (just enough to swallow the medication).
Medication management
To ensure safe care, it is important that medical and nursing staff know exactly which medications you usually take.
HOW CAN YOU BE INVOLVED?
- Make sure you have a complete and accurate list of your medicines for every hospital visit.
To help, you may use the “My Medication List” tool.
- During your hospital stay, please do not take any personal medicines without the approval of a healthcare professional, in order to avoid overdoses or drug interactions.
DURING YOUR HOSPITAL STAY
Your prescribed medicines will be provided by the hospital, and any personal medicines must be handed over to the nursing staff.
For safety reasons, staff will ask you to confirm your first name, surname, and date of birth before administering any medicine.
Staff are also required to inform you which medicine is being administered and for what purpose.
Please do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have!
Arrival on the day of your admission
Access the hospital via the main entrance of the Porte de Hal site, located at 105 Rue aux Laines (Entrance A).
- Please report first to Admissions (Route 504 – Admissions).
- Once your admission is complete, follow Route 605 Fast Track Unit (Building 600, 5th floor).
- Please take a seat in the waiting room until you are called.
What about your luggage?
Please bring only what is strictly necessary. Only one small bag may accompany you from the Fast Track Unit to the hospital ward for your stay. Additional luggage may be brought by your relatives directly to the ward during visiting hours after your procedure (return to your room is expected around 2 pm).
We recommend that you do not bring jewellery, laptops, or other valuables. The hospital cannot be held responsible for loss or theft.
Fast Track procedure
- A secretary will welcome you, after which a nurse will take care of you. This is a pre-operative pathway.
- You will receive an identification wristband. Please do not remove it, as it ensures your safety.
Your file will be completed (medical history, parameters, etc.).
You will be prepared for the operating theatre: you will change into a surgical gown and wear a cap. - Final care will be provided if necessary (eye drops, etc.).
- Final care will be provided if necessary (eye drops, etc.).
- Premedication will be administered if required. A nurse will accompany you to the operating theatre.
- You will then undergo your surgery.
After the procedure
After a stay in the recovery room, you will be taken to your room in the hospital ward. However, for medical reasons, you may need to remain in the recovery room overnight.
After your operation, you will be transferred to one of the following units:

Cancellation
Once an admission has been scheduled, it is important to notify us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend.
If you do not cancel at least 2 working days before your admission date, an administrative fee of €50 will be charged.
